“An enchanting story loaded with romance, mystery, humor, good & evil, twists & turns. Impossible to put down.” ~ Amazon Reader Longtime DF Fan
“Jamaica Unicom, this is Alpha Delta Charlie…”
Were there any other words in the English language, any other voice in the Universe? Right now, I didn’t think so.
Gray, clinging, swirling, never-ending fog stretched in front of the small Piper Comanche. I’d flown from Miami to Jamaica at least ten times over the past two years in this little plane, always with Ken Hanslett in the pilot’s seat. As personal trouble-shooter to Ramos International’s CEO, it was part of my job to coordinate corporate functions. Just business as usual. Not this time. Welcome to the Twilight Zone.
“Ken, give it a rest. You’re getting hoarse. Nobody’s answering.”
“Yeah, but you never know, Tess. We gotta keep trying.”
All the instrument gauges oscillated wildly from one side of their respective circles to the other. Just like they’d done for the past hour. I’d almost given up looking at them. Almost. I couldn’t stop myself completely.
“Ken! Look!”
I couldn’t believe it. The needles weren’t swinging wildly. The fog was lifting. We swooped back into blue and then rushed into flashes of green and brown. The plane skimmed treetops on its way down to rolling meadow. My brain screamed in protest. No way. We’d been flying over ocean, not land. We’d been cruising at 8,000 feet, not tree level.
“Ken?”
His hands flashed to the controls and the engines cut out. Kaleidoscopic colors rushed past. I felt the horrendous jolt of impact before I heard it and then there was only the slow swishing sound of the propellers revolving slowly into stillness.
I fought unconsciousness and struggled back to the light through dancing motes of black, wrenching nausea. The plane was at an angle, the impact on the pilot’s side—the pilot’s side! Oh my God!
I struggled up out of the seat, panicking at the bonds holding me back, at visions of the plane exploding with both of us still inside. I fumbled with the seatbelt and triggered the release.
“Ken?”
He slumped over the wheel. My mind tried to shut down, deny the obvious, but I couldn’t let it. His chest was crushed. Blood trickled from his lip. No, that wasn’t right. Not from his lip. Down his lip, coming from his mouth. I lurched forward, moving too fast, and the body of the plane shifted its balance. I sat still.
I won’t think. That’s easier. Much easier. Just for a minute.
I lay back against the seat and looked out the window onto a vista impossible for the Caribbean, at trees native to the deep hardwood forests of the Northern Hemisphere. The sunlight was wrong, subtly different. Redder, rawer, newer.
I looked back at Ken. I had to think about it. I had to face it. This wasn’t a sci-fi movie, this was real.
I’d flown through the Bermuda Triangle and come out alive on the other side, with a dying pilot and a wrecked plane.
Love the new title
I loved this book the first time. However, the new title is much better. The story is adventurous and full of humor. Just the kind of book I like. I highly recommend this writer. If you have never read her other books please do. For those of you who take my advice, happy reading. Let me recommend some to start. If you want one with an occult overtone read the War-N-Wit series. Fun reading and a wonderful love story or two. For those who want mystery and romance try Down Home or Justice as I think the new title will be. Whatever Gail writes will give you what you want along with a healthy dose of humor to keep you going onto her next book. ~ Susan Young, December 23, 2013 A Whole New World!
